Background of Nilphamari Sadar Upazila Administration
Nilphamari Sadar Upazila of Nilphamari district was established with 15 unions and a municipality. In ancient times, Nilphamari was indigo cultivation.
According to the information obtained from Rangpur Gazetteer, it was found that in 1875 Sadar thana was established in the upazila of the upazila, in front of the Chararikhola union's innocuous Daruani Mauja (J, L No-87). In 1882, Thana Sadar was shifted to Nilphamari Town Mouza (J.L., No-58). As part of the administrative reorganization, Nilphamari thana, Nilphamari started its activities as the administrative unit on 1 February in 1984 as Sadar upazila.
Due to the usefulness of blue cultivation in Nilphamari in the Greater Rangpur region during the British colonial rule, indigo cultivation was established as part of a large number of indigenous cultivation programs in Natkhana area of the upazila. The name 'Nilphamari' is derived from the 'Nil Farm' in the Nilphamari subdivision of a large blue fodder folk tune from the present Nilphamari railway station. In 1859 - 1860, due to the massive peasant rebellion, the name of the indigo cultivation in this region, however, got the name of the name "Nilphamari".
